FAQ

Face to Face Counselling

How long will my therapy take?
The duration of therapy cannot be predicted in advance. There is no formula or prescribed time period based on various crisis and difficulties. The success and duration of therapy relies upon the skill of the therapist but more importantly upon the willingness of the client. Some people can move faster than others. Some issues require longer periods than others. So you can see, there are many complicating variables that affect the length of any individual's therapy. Read on to the next question. It will provide more details regarding this question!

What is an "intake?"
An intake is the process in which you are carefully matched with the best-qualified therapist for your situation. When you call for an appointment the intake workers will speak with you for about five to ten minutes to accomplish three things. They will take important information from you as well as answer any questions you might have. They will access you needs and the area of specialist required. Thirdly they will match you with a therapist that best suits your needs and book an appointment.

What if I don't feel comfortable with my therapist?
The first 1 to 2 appointments are used to take a "client history". A "client history" provides the therapist a clear picture about the issues the client may have. It also gives both the therapist and the client an opportunity to "check each other out." By this, we mean, it provides both sides an opportunity to assess whether this is a mutually beneficial and productive therapeutic relationship. Both sides should feel comfortable with one another and the therapist must feel that the issues involved are within their area of experience. This "client history"" will result in the agreement between client and therapist about the approximate number of sessions required and an understanding of what issues need to be tackled. This allows the client an opportunity to know about the therapy involved, the approximate duration and the goals of the therapy. Such information helps both parties feel comfortable and aware of the expectations.

How often do I have to come?
Most people initially come once every week at the start of therapy. Again, the frequency of visits depends upon the seriousness of the problem. Some people may require 2 visits in the same week initially. This will be discussed in during the first session. It will depend upon the therapist's recommendation and the client's willingness to participate along with their desired rate of pace during therapy. If the suggested frequency might present too much of a financial burden, you can choose the frequency you are most comfortable with.

How do I know which therapist is right for me?
Choosing the right therapist is an important decision. Much care is given in choosing the appropriate therapist. When you initially phone in for an appointment, one of our trained staff will get brief details concerning the issues you would like help with. Upon hearing your information, our staff member will help you choose the appropriate therapist from our list of professionally trained therapists.

How long are the sessions?
Each session is 50 minutes long.

How much does this cost?
The Bayridge Family Center believes that health care should be accessible. To that end, we offer a wide range of prices depending upon the therapist you need. We have masters level student interns who provide therapy for $45 - $90 per session. If an intern is not an appropriate choice for your situation, our therapists have session rates of $90.00 - $150.00. If you need a registered psychologist to supervise your case, the cost is $150.00.

Is it covered by OHIP?
The province of Ontario does not currently subsidize these visits. You may be eligible for subsidization through extended health care insurance from your place of work or through an "Employee Assistance Plan (EAP)" available from your place of work. These arrangements must be made before your therapy begins.

Are your therapists qualified?
Our therapists have attained a Masters level or equivalency in professional training. They are also registered with the provincial professional governing bodies, appropriate to their training.
