Trauma refers to the condition whereby an individual experiences a one-time or a cluster of severe negative events. A traumatic event may include witnessing or experiencing a threatening event where they may be terrified or feel helpless.

- Interpersonal trauma- assault - war
- Attachment trauma - abandonment, neglect, betrayal or physical, psychological, verbal, emotional, sexual or spiritual abuse
Attachment theory began to take shape in the 50’s with the work of English psychiatrist John Bowlby, and American psychologist Mary Ainsworth. Attachment theory is based on the belief that the mother - child (or caretaker) bond is the primary force in infant development. Bowlby’s premise was that the relationship between infant and the primary caretaker is responsible for shaping all future relationships. Our ability to focus and our awareness of our feelings help us to rebound from misfortune in life.
The negative affects of trauma may include relational and behavioural problems and psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, dissociation and post traumatic stress. The persistent negative effects of trauma often depend on whether the “victim” has sufficient emotional structure to accommodate the event in to their belief system and find hope, support and restored sense of strength and dignity.
Attachment trauma in childhood can be extremely problematic. It influences the course of a child’s psychological, social, emotional and physiological development over their entire lifetime. The attachment bond between children and their primary caregiver profoundly affects the structure and functioning of the human brain.
When attachment efforts fail through loss, neglect, abuse or just emotional unavailability, this often leads to attachment trauma. This in turn directly affects their emotional homeostasis and relational foundations. Of course, this becomes translated into every relationship from marriage to parenting, friendships to leadership, as memories of failed relationships create the assumptive world of the adult’s expectations.
